The present North Wing and Rotunda of the New Jersey State House were completed in 1889 following the destruction of the previous Rotunda North Wing during a fire on March 21, 1885. Lewis Broome of Jersey City served as the architect of the Renaissance Revival addition. The exterior faade is composed of Indiana Limestone with trimmings of New Jersey Free Stone with Jonesboro Granite columns. The firm of Kirk and Jacobus of Newark designed and installed the bronze wainscoting of the Rotunda as well as all eighteen stained glass windows. The firm of Post and McCord designed the second-story balcony railings in 1889, while the third-story balcony railings were added by the architect E. H. Finch in 1894-95. The carver of the American bald eagle remains anonymous.
