dc.descriptionBy the 1990's, the surface of the dome showed unsightly chipping and peeling, noticeable from a distance. As part of the restoration project of the late 1990's, a new copper surface was installed over the wood of the dome and then meticulously covered by artists by hand with gold leaf.
