Mr. Samuel Lewis built a wooden mill on this site in 1768. It would be replaced by this stone mill in 1842. The mill became important in supplying Washington's troops with food essentials including flour and meal during the winter encampment at nearby Jockey Hollow during the winter of 1779-1780. The Van Dorn mill is part of the Franklin Corners Historic district. This district was named for the American patriot Benjamin Franklin.
