dc.descriptionOften nearby large trees would be felled, milled, and used for the construction of company buildings, sold locally. After the canal was built the transportation of lumber to the large cities became economical. As a result the land was cleared which led to an increasing emphasis on commercial farming and increased profits from the mills operation.
