Formerly Newark High School, Berringer established in 1838, It has the distinction of being the first high school in the state and is the third oldest in the nation. The name was changed on the 21st of July in the year 1907 to honor the then current Superintendent of Schools, Dr. William Nathan Barringer. Some of its famous graduates include: - Moe Berg, Major League Baseball player, and spy for the CIA. - Jerome Kern, composer of musical theatre and popular music. - Andre Tippett Hall of Fame former linebacker with the New England Patriots. - William J. Brennan, was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. - Congressman Peter W. Rodino - Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. irst superintendent of the New Jersey State Police and father of General "Stormin' Norman" Norman Schwarzkopf Jr.
