Abstract

Description

This statue of George Washington was dedicated in Morristown on October 19, 1928, the anniversary of the surrender of British General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. It was commissioned to commemorate the fact that the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army made his winter headquarters here in Morristown twice during the Revolutionary War.
