Abstract

Description

Next to the Vincent R. Casciano Memorial Bridge is the CRRNJ Newark Bay Bridge. The Newark Bay Bridge of the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) was a railroad bridge that connected Elizabethport and Bayonne at the southern end of Newark Bay. The bridge served the main line of the CNJ, carrying daily interstate trains as well as commuter trains. In 1958, a Central Railroad of New Jersey train ran through stop signals onto an open lift bridge and plunged into Newark Bay, killing 48 and injuring 48. As the crew perished in the accident, no cause was able to be determined on why this incident happened.
