The USS Randolph was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during and following World War II for the United States Navy This carrier was built in 1944 and decommissioned in 1969. During World War II it endured a number of Japanese kamikaze attacks. It returned to public prominence as the recovery ship for Mercury astronauts Gus Grissom and John Glenn. This anchor was given to Toms River to honor the town's early shipping commerce on the Toms River which helped build the village as a commercial center.
