Description
Built in 1750 the Indian King Tavern was the center of commercial and social life for Haddonfield during the American Revolution.
Named for the local Lenape Indians, It is one of New Jersey's most historic buildings.
It served as a forum for heated debates between the Loyalists, and the Patriots. These debates often put the lives of both those arguing and the owners of such places in jeopardy.
In addition, it was the site of a 1777 meeting of the New Jersey General Assembly that officially ratified the Declaration of Independence and adopted its Great Seal.
It was named as the first State Historic Site which was adopted in 1903. Its original structure remains largely intact and today serves as a state museum.
