The turn of the 20th century saw the growth of the railyards, car floats, ferry slips, and passenger stations along the waterfront in Weehawken. Unfortunately this infrastructure became obsolete and fell in disrepair. In 1981 Arthur Edward Imperatore, Sr., trucking magnate, purchased a 2.5 miles of the Weehawken Yard from the bankrupt Penn Central for $7.5 million, He created Port Imperial with the vision of reestablishing ferry service to New York City. In addition his dream became the inspiration for the creation of this residential, commercial, and recreational neighborhood which includes residential buildings and luxury high rises.
