Abstract

Description

In Orthodox Christian usage the Chalice is a form of a stemmed cup or goblet used to offer Communion during the Divine Liturgy. The chalice is usually made of a precious metal, gold or silver, and maybe plain, engraved, bejeweled, or decorated with a combination of adornment. During the entry to the eucharistic service the wine is brought in the chalice and a plate called the Paten or Diskos is used to carry the prosphora, which is a leavened bread or artos. These combined are the Holy Gifts. Both the Chalice and Diskos were made in Russia and are covered in beautiful Lapis. At least one of these Sts. Peter and Paul's Hand crosses is kept on the Holy Table and used at certain moments during the liturgy, most noticeably when he holds it in his right hand as he gives the final blessing at the dismissal of the Divine Liturgy. At the end of the Divine Liturgy all of the faithful come forward to kiss the cross. These hand crosses are made of precious metal and may be adorned with enamel and precious or semi-precious gemstones. This altar table is covered with a brocade covering, the color of which changes with the liturgical season. Atop the altar table is the tabernacle, a miniature shrine sometimes built in the form of a church, inside of which is a small ark containing the reserved Sacrament for use in communing the sick. Also, a multi-branch candle stand, usually with seven candles, is placed near the back of the table as one looks from the nave. Also kept on the altar is the book of the Gospels. and Crosses. In 1968 this cross was donated to the church in memory of Mary and Wasily Hawrylak by their children. It is kept in the Sanctuary of the church
