dc.descriptionThe Delaware and Raritan Canal was completed in 1834. It was dug by hand, mostly by Irish Immigrants , It is 66 miles long, 75 feet wide, and 8 feet deep. It originally had 14 locks which were used to overcome elevation differences along the canal route. Many of the locks are still present, however, the lock gates have been replaced on the upstream side with small dams and water outfalls
