dc.description | In 1850, Isaac and Jasper Rundle recognized the need for a place to buy and sell goods. They opened and ran a general store in Walpack Center that provided basic goods brought in from Newton and Blairstown, New Jersey. Local farmers would bring their produce to the general store to be sold to merchants who passed through. The commercial opportunities at the general store spurred further development in the village. By 1872, Walpack Center had grown to include a blacksmith shop, Methodist Church, post office, and schoolhouse, making it a rural service center. An area post office was operating nearby as early as 1828 but was moved to Walpack Center in 1854 in response to the growing community. This post office resided within the general store with Jasper Rundle as its first Postmaster. Using businesses, like the general store, as post offices was common practice during this time since it was cheaper than opening and staffing an entirely new building. One early February morning in 1915, the general store, then owned and operated by the Ellett Family, caught fire. Farmers who were up early to tend to their livestock saw the smoke and flames from a distance. They rushed over to help, but the store was lost. Thanks to the communitys quick action, and a shift in the winds, the house next door was spared a similar fate. Through hard work and community effort, the store was rebuilt, restocked, and reopened only 30 days later. After the fire, the store and post office continued to serve the community for many more years. The post office finally closed its doors in 1988 | |
