dc.description | Ritz-Carlton, which opened in 1921still dominates the city's Boardwalk. The stately Beaux Arts structure, faced in red brick, is a welcome reminder of a grand and gaudy age, when political potentate Enoch Nucky Johnson leased the entire ninth floor as a residence for himself, and a way station for his cronies. The famous and infamous of the time walked these storied halls, from presidents (Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Warren G. Harding) to entertainers (Sophie Tucker) to mobsters (Al Capone, Lucky Luciano). The city was a neutral zone where mobsters from all jurisdictions came for rest and relaxation. For instance, Meyer Lansky honeymooned here in the Presidential suite. There, he held court for local celebrities and politicos; the chief political boss of Atlantic City -- "Knuckles" Johnson who arrived bearing French champagne and a fur coat for Lansky's new wife The Ritz was converted to condominiums in 1980, and thanks to a painstaking eight-year restoration commissioned by its boarda restoration that is ongoingthe common areas of the hotel look much as they did during the Jazz Age. | |
