Old First, known as 'the church that founded Newark,' was established 46 years after the landing of the Mayflower, following the Great Fire of London, and shortly after the close of England's Elizabethan Age. In fact, the congregation which came to Newark in 1666, was actually formed in 1644 while still in Connecticut. The First Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Newark. It was originally a Congregational Church. The change to Presbyterian occurred in 1720. It is located on Broad Street in Newark. The seventh pastor of the church was Aaron Burr Sr. He served as pastor from December, 1736 until the fall of 1755. It was during his tenure in Newark that the Great Schism in the Presbyterian Church of America occurred. This schism led to the founding of New Jersey College, which is now Princeton University. In 1755 Rev. Burr resigned his pastorate but retained the presidency of the college. The college moved to Princeton in 1756. His son Aaron Burr jr. would become the 3rd Vice President of the United States. He would later kill Alexander in a duel in Weehawken NJ
