Abstract

Description

With the influx of Irish and German immigrants in the 1840s, Bishop John Hughes of New York authorized Rev. Patrick Moran, pastor of St. Johns Parish, to build a new church. The building was probably designed by architect Patrick Keely of Brooklyn. Bishop Hughes laid the cornerstone on Sept. 17, 1848. Rev. Louis Dominic Senez, assistant at St. John's was named the first pastor. The church was dedicated on March 10, 1850. St. Patrick's was the third Catholic church in Newark. Built at the height of the American Gothic Revival, the pro-cathedral is an excellent example of the simpler versions of the style. This simplicity is reflected in the choice of exterior material, brick rather than stone, and the lack of spatial complexity in the interior plan. This church would hold a special place in the history of the Archdiocese of Newark,
