| dc.description | This bowl was created to celebrate The Society of the Cincinnati which is a hereditary society with branches in the United States and France. It was founded in 1783, to preserve the ideals and fellowship of officers of the Continental Army who served in the Revolutionary War. Richard Varick, who served in the American Revolution custom ordered this Chinese bowl to memorialize his membership in the Cincinnati formed in 1783 by Continental Army Officers. Varick's certification. was signed by George Washington, is reproduced on the bowl along with allegorical in images. In part, the inscription reads that members of the Society "commemorate the great Events which gave Independence to North America".. | |
