Abstract

Description

Located in the Narthex of the cathedral is the Basilica's Coat of Arms. It is based on the Arms of Newark in Nottinghamshire England, which is the origin of the name Newark. The Crescent Moon is the symbol of the Immaculate Conception. The shamrocks honor St. Patrick, patron saint of the pro-cathedral. The color red is a symbol of the Blood of Christ while the blue and silver waves represent the rivers that flow through the archdiocese. The Sacred Heart burning with love for all people is on a field of gold while the letter M represents Our Lady and is taken from the Coat of Arms of John Paul II . It serves as an indication of the bond that exists between the Church of Rome and the church of Newark. The crossed keys are symbols of the Papacy. The Ombellrellino, is a papal emblem that signifies that the church is a Basilica and the words inscribed at the Bottom are from Matthew 11:28-29, "Come to Me all who labor and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest".
