Abstract

Description

Opening in 1910 Dickinson High School occupies a prominent location on Bergen Hill overlooking lower Jersey City and the New York Harbor. Dickinson's design is similar to the 1668 colonnade by Claude Perrault for the Louvre in Paris and other European landmarks, such as England's Buckingham Palace and the Hermitage in Moscow. It was the first public secondary school in Jersey City. When the school opened, it housed a 2,000 seat auditorium that saw extensive public use, and hosted such events as a lecture by Helen Keller and political rallies for United States Presidents Taft, Wilson, and Roosevelt.
