Originally established in 1886 as the Ironsides Normal School in Bordentown the school was absorbed by the state in 1894 and came under the State Board of Education in 1900. It was at various times called the Manual Training and Industrial School for Colored Youth, Bordentown Manual Training School, State of New Jersey Manual Training School
