On June 28, 1778, a pivotal Revolutionary War battle occurred just outside Freehold between the Continental forces of George Washington and British regulars under General Henry Clinton. This confrontation gave Washington's troops the desperately needed confidence to continue fighting for America's independence from England.
Washington's battle plan was created after receiving word that Genera; Clinton's forces were on route from Philadelphia to New York City through New Jersey.
Clinton feared that the arrival of the French fleet off America's shores and wanted to place his troops in New York, where he believed they would be able to withstand an attack.
Each year on the weekend closest to the battle date the battle is reenacted.
