The Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has responsibilities for building, maintaining and operating New Jersey's transportation facilities. It is comprised of the Administration Office, Planning, Capital Program Management, Operations, Government and Community Relations, and State Wide Traffic Operations. It is also affiliated with the New Jersey Transit Corporation, Motor Vehicle Commission, and the Maritime Pilot and Docking Pilot Commission.
The Department was established in 1966 from the former State Highway Department. At the same time, it absorbed the functions of the Bureau of Aeronautics, transferred from the Department of Conservation and Economic Development.
