The Department oversees the collection of state taxes and has responsibilities for the State's budget, spending, and debt. It is comprised of several divisions and offices, including Administration, Investment, Management and Budget, Pensions and Benefits, Property Management and Construction, Public Finance, Purchase and Property, Revenue and Economic Analysis, State Lottery, and Taxation. It is also affiliated with several independent agencies, including the Office of Information Technology, State Comptroller, Corrections Ombudsman, State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Division of Rate Counsel, Garden State Preservation Trust, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, and the Office of the Public Defender.

The Department was formed in 1916 and was one of the thirteen departments established under the New Jersey Constitution of 1947.
