The Department has responsibilities to support the State’s economic vitality and its cultural and historic programs. It is the Keeper of the Great Seal of the State and has responsibilities for promoting civic engagement. The Department is comprised of the State Archives, the Division of Elections, Division of Programs, Business Action Center, Red Tape Review Commission, Council on the Arts, Historical Commission, Cultural Trust, State Museum, War Memorial, Center for Faith Based Initiatives, Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development, Planning Advocacy, and the State Planning Commission. It is also affiliated with the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education, Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, the State Library, and the Sports and Exposition Authority.
The Department was one of the thirteen departments established under the New Jersey Constitution of 1947.
