Brendan Byrne was born in West Orange in 1924. His term as Governor saw the introduction of several key pieces of legislation including the Pinelands Protection Act; the commencement and expansion of casino gambling in Atlantic City; the approval of the State's educational and fiscal program including the adoption of the income tax; the enactment of the Spill Compensation and Control Act; the development of the Meadowlands; the creation of New Jersey Transit and the development of Liberty State Park.
