    50th IBCT Comes Home

    Amid tears of joy and tender embraces, the first soldiers of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team returned home from Iraq on Memorial Day celebration. By June 12th, all 2,800 will be home. Their deployment was the largest in NJ since WWII. Governor Corzine was there when the soldiers left and went to visit in Texas before their deployment and also during their tour in Iraq. On Memorial day he was waiting on the tarmac with the families to thank the returning heroes for their service and sacrifice in defense of our nation.

    50th IBCT Welcome Home Parade

    Breaking Ground on the Nation's Largest Transit Project

    On June 8th the Governor, along with state and federal officials, broke ground on a new Mass Transit Tunnel under the Hudson River. The project will streamline commuting in and out of New York City, create 6,000 construction jobs a year for the next seven years and produce 44,000 permanent jobs after completion as a result of increased economic mobility in the region.     Dedication of New Jersey's World War II Memorial at Veterans Park

    On November 11, 2008 New Jersey's World War II Memorial was dedicated in front of hundreds of surviving New Jersey World War II veterans. The memorial will open to the public in 2009. It is located at 125 W State Street in Trenton, directly across the street from the New Jersey Statehouse.

    Eliminating School Districts without Schools

    Calling it a positive first step toward school district consolidation, Governor Corzine signed legislation to eliminate non-operating school districts and merge them into existing ones. Non-operating districts are typically those with a small number of students, that do not operate schools. As a result, students are sent to another district via a send-receive relationship. The non-operating district is charged tuition for the students it sends to the receiving district. Non-operating districts have school board to assemble the budget for the district. There are 26 non-operating districts throughout New Jersey. 13 of them will be eliminated under Phase I this Fall.

    Governor Corzine and NJ Parents Share Pre School Success Stories

    On Monday July 13th Governor Corzine discussed the findings of a new Rutgers report on pre-school success in New Jersey with parents, teachers and community leaders at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Center for Early Childhood Education in Union City. The Governor detailed some of the studies findings, showing that children who attended Abbott preschool education programs outperformed their peers in first and second grades, and children who had two years of preschool rather than just one had double the advantages. Preschool attendees also performed better in oral language, math and conceptual knowledge. Parents with children enrolled in the program shared some of their own success stories at the meeting.
