The Department is comprised of the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard and the Office of Veterans Affairs. It also runs three veterans' homes, a veterans' memorial cemetery, transitional housing for homeless veterans and veterans' services offices.
The Department was established in 1988 after being renamed from the short-lived Department of Veterans Affairs and Defense (1987-1988). (The Department of Veterans Affairs and Defense was established in 1987 after the reorganization of the Department of Defense, which had been one of the 13 departments established under the Constitution of 1947.)
