Update from the New Jersey State Library on Proposed Federal Budget Cuts

In recent weeks the White House announced the President's budget proposal which calls for the elimination of the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding. NJ residents and the library community have reached out to express concern about this development, so in response we'd like to provide the following information about the current use of federal funding for libraries in NJ.

NJ Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Survey Needs Your Input

This 20 minute survey will be used by the New Jersey State Library and the Planning Committee in development of a statewide DPLA strategy and a DPLA application for a service hub in NJ. Complete the survey by April 7.

NJ Libraries Selected to Host Children's Math and Science Story Time (MASST) Series

The NJ State Library and the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University partnered to offer 10 public libraries the opportunity to participate in the Math and Science Story Times Series: Bringing math and science to life through reading and art for preschoolers in a community-based setting, a STEM initiative that serves the Spanish-speaking community. The libraries will receive resources kits, training, and be provided with a Spanish-speaking presenter, if needed.

NJSL Fade to Books Program Grant Application Available - Deadline is May 5

The New Jersey State Library, in partnership with the Long Branch Public Library and the Bridge of Books Foundation, is pleased to announce a new grant opportunity for public libraries who join with their local barbershops in an effort to promote youth literacy in their communities. Please see the guidelines and application for complete information about the application process and dates.

Class Provides Valuable Tips on Managing a Conversation Group for English Learners

The NJSL Tutor Training for ESL Conversation Groups is created in partnership with Literacy New Jersey for those who wish to teach/lead/facilitate ESL conversation sessions at a local library. There are still seats available for the class in Mullica Hill on May 4. There is no cost for participants.

ALA Leadership College Applications Due April 13

The institute, held August 7 - 10 in St. Charles, IL, is designed to help future library leaders develop and practice their leadership skills in areas critical to the future of the libraries they lead. Cost is $1650.

Oakley Memorial Scholarship Deadline May 15

The $1000 scholarship was established to support research and advanced study for librarians in their early-to-mid-careers who are interested and/or active in the fields that Robert Oakley was expert in, namely: intellectual property, public policy, copyright and their impacts on libraries and the ways libraries serve their communities.

National Library Week 2017 Video Challenge

For National Library Week 2017, the American Library Association is asking you to share your librarie's stories. Everyone who submits a video will be entered for a chance to win one of three $50 gift certificates to the ALA online store. Submit your videos no later than midnight on Saturday, April 15, 2017, for a chance to win.

LibraryLinkNJ Incubator Project Award Opportunity - Powering Up: Library Charging Stations

The initiative will promote the New Jersey library community's goals of being safe havens and centers of community support, articulating their value, and supporting library user technology by awarding funds (up to $6000) for the purchase of secure public device charging stations for up to 12 LLNJ members. Deadline is April 28.

Patterson Copyright Award Nominations Sought

Appropriate nominees for the Patterson Award are persons or groups who - over a stretch in time - have made significant and consistent contributions in the areas of academia, law, politics, public policy, libraries or library education to the pursuit of copyright principles. Deadline is May 15.

2017 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Program

The purpose of the Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award is to recognize, promote, and support excellence in humanities programming in elementary and middle school libraries that serve children K-8. Application deadline is May 5.

Local Library Support Fund State Income Tax Check-off

Don't forget to let your patrons know that they can help support New Jersey's public libraries by donating to the Local Library Support Fund on their New Jersey tax form.
