NJSL Fade to Books Program Grant Application Available - Deadline is May 5

The New Jersey State Library, in partnership with the Long Branch Public Library and the Bridge of Books Foundation, is pleased to announce a new grant opportunity for public libraries who join with their local barbershops in an effort to promote youth literacy in their communities. Please see the guidelines and application for complete information about the application process and dates.

Apply to Host Children's Math and Science Story Time (MASST) Series - Deadline tomorrow, 3/3

Applicants who wish to participate in, and host the Math and Science Story Time (MASST) Series at their public library are required to read the guidelines and complete an application form, found here on the NJ State Library's website. Ten public libraries will be selected to host and receive the materials for the MASST sessions, valued at $750 for each library.

Please email the completed application form along with supporting materials to Sharon Rawlins at srawlins@njstatelib.org by Friday, March 3, 2017 at 5 pm. The winning libraries will be notified by email by March 14, 2017.

2017 American Dream Libraries Announced - Six NJ Libraries Selected

The American Library Association (ALA) Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services has recently announced the recipients of the American Dream Literacy Initiative grant. This year, six New Jersey libraries were selected: Cresskill Public Library, Keyport Public Library, Maplewood Memorial Library, North Bergen Free Public Library, South Brunswick Public Library, West Orange Public Library. State Library Sessions at the 2017 NJLA Annual Conference

Join your colleagues across the state April 24-26, 2017 at the NJLA Annual Conference, taking place this year at Harrah's Resort in Atlantic City. Registration is now open here.

SC&I Wide Career Expo at Rutgers' School of Communication & Information - March 20

The Rutgers School of Communication & Information (SC&I) invites you to join their 2nd Annual SC&I WIDE CAREER EXPO. The Expo brings companies, professional organizations, libraries and non-profits together to network with students to discuss career paths and opportunities. The free event will be held in the College Ave. Student Center. This is a great time to recruit for summer internships or entry level positions for graduating seniors.

You are not required to have open positions to take advantage of this opportunity to network with students. Any opportunity to meet with professionals who offer insight into career paths is welcomed.

This year, they have added an Information and Library Professional Connection Space which will include Information Technology, Informatics and Data Analytics, Archival, Academic, School, and Public Library representatives to network and discuss careers with students and alums. If you are interested in having your library be part of this networking event, please RSVP.

Consumer Health Training Workshops

Lydia Collins, Consumer Health Coordinator of the National Network Libraries of Medicine, Middle Atlantic Region (LM MAR), will be teaching two consumer health classes in one session.

Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 5 different libraries the end of March. Cost is $10.

Activate, Collaborate, and Educate: Health Outreach and Programming in Your Community.

New Jersey Makers Day: Celebrating Maker Culture Statewide

The 3rd Annual New Jersey Makers Day will take place March 24-25, 2017. NJ Makers Day began in 2015 to enhance community engagement and develop connections among New Jersey residents by collaborating with multi-type libraries, museums, small businesses and others to promote and explore new opportunities for entrepreneurship, innovation and hands-on learning experiences. Class Provides Valuable Tips on Managing a Conversation Group for English Learners

The NJSL Tutor Training for ESL Conversation Groups is created in partnership with Literacy New Jersey for those who wish to teach/lead/facilitate ESL conversation sessions at a local library. There are still seats available for the class in Mullica Hill on May 4. There is no cost for participants.

Grants for Libraries

Through its Funding Information Center and Library Support Services unit, the New Jersey State Library provides funding and grant information to New Jersey's librarians and other library staff. Check out the full list of resources here.

2017 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Exemplary Humanities Program

The purpose of the Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award is to recognize, promote, and support excellence in humanities programming in elementary and middle school libraries that serve children K-8. Application deadline is May 5.

Local Library Support Fund State Income Tax Check-off

Don't forget to let your patrons know that they can help support New Jersey's public libraries by donating to the Local Library Support Fund on their New Jersey tax form.
