Learn About the New Jersey Career Assistance Navigator

Help the State Library spread the word about the New Jersey Career Assistance Navigator, a free web-based career navigation system, funded by the New Jersey Department of Education, that provides comprehensive information for middle and high school students to develop well informed college and career plans. It includes tools that encourage self-assessment, career and post-secondary education exploration, goal setting, and decision making. The site helps students make informed decisions about their future based on relevant actionable information. Learn more here.

The State Library is offering free access to READsquared, an online reading program solution. Autism Resource Fair

April is Autism Awareness Month, so the State Library coordinated a Virtual Autism Resource Fair to spread the word about the organizations and resources available to members of the Autism community. The list of organizations include Autism NJ, Autism Speaks, and Parents of Autistic Children. Information from featured organizations provides links to fact sheets, webinars, current research, resources addressing COVID-19 and autism, as well as items for families about education, health-care, therapy, and more. Please share the Virtual Autism Resource Fair with your family, friends, schools, libraries, and any other person or group that can benefit from this information.

Emergency Digital Collecting Toolkit Available

The Emergency Digital Collecting Toolkit, created by the University of Virginia and funded by the LYRASIS Catalyst Grant Program, is helping libraries, archives, museums, and cultural institutions respond to the COVID-19 crisis. This toolkit provides resources and instructions on implementing digital collecting strategies before, during, and after rapidly-evolving social events and/or community crises. HelpNJNow Volunteer Portal

The HelpNJNow volunteer portal is open and over 800 volunteers have already answered the call to help New Jersey's organizations and agencies battle the Covid-19 pandemic. This partnership between New Jersey Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster and the Governor's Office of Volunteerism harnesses the power of volunteers to meet current needs, while maintaining the commitment to our overall state strategy of shelter in place. The system's paramount objective is the health and safety of volunteers, and the beneficiaries of their service. Heritage Emergency's COVID-19 Resource Hub

The Heritage Emergency National Task Force, co-sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Smithsonian Institution, is a partnership of 42 national service organizations (including ALA) and federal agencies. HENTF has compiled relevant COVID-19 resources from its members and other stakeholders. Learn more here.

Scholarship to Attend Association for Rural and Small Libraries Conference

The State Library will award a $1,000 scholarship for one New Jersey public librarian to attend the Association for Rural and Small Libraries Conference from September 30th to October 3rd in Wichita, Kansas. Priority will be given to first-time ARSL Conference attendees, ARSL members, and a public library service community population of 10,000 or less. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on May 18, 2020. PLA's Insurance Education and Outreach Initiative

Through the Public Library Association's second annual "Libraries Connecting You to Coverage" initiative, libraries can access a suite of turnkey resources to start or increase efforts to educate and build awareness of health insurance coverage options, especially with the evolving workforce landscape. With the outbreak of COVID-19, many patrons may experience job cuts and layoffs, and many uninsured people in our communities may be wondering if they can now enroll in a health insurance plan. Libraries can ACT NOW with pre-made social media and communications assets for health insurance and health literacy:

Covid-19
Coverage options, including Medicaid or Special Enrollment Period
Using your health insurance
Preventive care
Social media-friendly assets
Radio ad scripts
Spanish-language assets

GRANT OPPORTUNITES

New Jersey Council for the Humanities COVID-19 Response Grants Available

New Jersey Council for the Humanities has announced the availability of guidelines for their COVID-19 Response Grants. This emergency funding will support local historic and cultural sites, libraries, museums, and other humanities institutions across New Jersey. General Operating Support grants are available to 501c3 nonprofit organizations that have a mission rooted in the public humanities and an organizational budget greater than $50,000. Program Support Grants are available for organizations who undertake humanities programs, whether or not their organization's primary mission is based in the humanities. Requests must be for programs already in process as of March 27, 2020, not new programs. Applications will be available May 8, 2020, and they will be reviewed until all funds are expended.

National Endowment for the Humanities CARES Act Grant Application Open

The National Endowment for the Humanities invites applications from eligible organizations seeking support for at-risk humanities positions and short-term projects that have been impacted by the coronavirus. NEH will award grants to museums, libraries and archives, historic sites, independent research institutions, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and other cultural organizations across the country to help these entities continue to advance their mission during the interruption of their operations due to the pandemic. The application deadline is May 11, 2020.

Freedom to Read Foundation's Banned Books Week Grants Available

Applications are being accepted for the Freedom to Read Foundation Banned Books Week Grants offered through the Judith F. Krug Memorial Fund. Each year, FTRF distributes grants to non-profit organizations to support activities that raise awareness of intellectual freedom and censorship issues during the annual Banned Books Week celebration (Sep. 27 to Oct. 3, 2020). Staff at all types of libraries, schools, universities, and community organizations are encouraged to apply. Grants are awarded at two levels, $1,000 and $2,500. The application deadline is May 31, 2020.

Libraries Lead with Digital Skills Grant Available

Libraries Lead with Digital Skills is an initiative of ALA and PLA, sponsored by Google, to ensure that public libraries across the nation receive ongoing access to free tools and resources to help everyone across America grow their skills, careers, and businesses. This funding program is open to any library that needs support for virtual library programming, so you can continue supporting job seekers and small businesses in your community. To apply, explain how your library is assisting job seekers and empowering small business owners with digital skills and select one of the Grow with Google resources to integrate into a new or existing outreach or virtual service. Apply by June 1, 2020. Learn more here.

National Endowment of the Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Program Applications Open

Applications are available for the Humanities Collections and Reference Resources program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program supports projects in libraries, archives, museums and historical organizations that strengthen efforts to extend the life of such materials as books and manuscripts, photographs, sound recordings and moving images, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, art and material culture, and digital objects, and make their intellectual content widely accessible, often through the use of digital technology. Awards are also made to create various reference resources that facilitate use of cultural materials from works that provide basic information quickly to tools that synthesize and codify knowledge of a subject for in-depth investigation. Applications are due July 15, 2020.
