Votes and Proceedings

New Jersey was first a proprietary colony (1664-1702) and later a royal province (1703-1776). While under royal rule the governor and council were appointed by the Crown and only the assembly was elected. The new state constitution of 1776 provided for an elected general assembly and and a council member elected annually from each county.
